Rating: 4 stars (out of 5)
Dreamspinner’s 2016 Daily Dose anthology includes 30 romantic male/male shifter stories released one a day during the month of June.
Summary: One-third really cute doggie romping fun, one-third hot lumberjack sizzle, and one-third just a sweet m/m shifter read.
Synopsis: Phillip, a British Spaniel shifter on holiday in Colorado, ends up as a rescued mutt in a local shelter after a night of too much indulgence. When the dog is “adopted” by Sam, a local forest ranger, the situation becomes a bit dicey for the shifter stuck in his canine form. The Englishman has some explaining to do when Sam looks for newly adopted pup only to find a naked, collared man instead.
Review: The author weaves an endearing and clever take on the shifter meme, splicing sweet and cute with hairy and hot. The brief tale indulges in both the cuteness of canine merriment and mirth as well as the heat of a mountain of a man living a solitary life deep in the mountainous woods. As wolf shifter stories often draw upon “natural” wolf behaviors into characters’ behaviors, this story milks the most endearing doggie rambunctiousness into Phillip’s release in the remote wilds. Sam’s lumbersexual vibe is palpable which the author utilizes in nicely choreographed, sizzling scenes between a bear like man and a much more lithe pup. A cabin deep in the woods, the urge to frolic in the snow, icy tendrils of beauty and enchantment, and the natural need to generate man-on-man heat in the heart of winter all make this a very cute, nicely heated, and very enjoyable quick read.
Recommended for: Weredog enthusiasts, dog lovers who appreciate silly puppy behavior, fans of lumberjacks/lumbersexuals, those who appreciate m/m short stories with a little cute fun and a nice little bit of explicit steam.
Best opening line: Gotta’ love a story that starts out with –
“There was a naked guy with a leather collar in the trunk of Sam’s SUV. It wasn’t like that hadn’t happened before, but this time, it was a surprise.”
I loved the first sentence, but when I read the second one, I knew I’d really enjoy this story.
Oh, and a 6’5″ hairy lumbersexual who keeps a collar in his car and had a penchant for naked men in his trunk? Be still my heart.
