Dreamspinner’s 2016 Daily Dose anthology includes 30 romantic male/male shifter stories released one a day during the month of June.

Synopsis:  After moving to a new territory with his clan, Darcy shifts into a dove to become accustomed to the new surroundings.  Egged on by Logan, Billy shoots the bird with his BB gun, breaking its wing.  Horrified, Billy brings the wounded animal to his Uncle Abel, the town veterinarian. After tending to the bird, Abel discovers the shifter’s true nature, and his attraction to the extremely fair young man.  But with the town also being hotbed for shifter hate, Abel cannot be certain indulging his lust for the extremely attractive lad is best for both of them.

Review: In many ways this is a perfectly enjoyable and typical short shifter story, well written with some common themes such as “shifter discrimination” and “shifter mates.”  However, the author also inserts a few unique elements that add to the experience.  In particular, although little is mentioned of shifter society, their animal forms are a bit of an interesting departure from standard genre settings.  Also, even though it was quick, I very much enjoyed a slightly different, sparkling take on the shifting experience.  (It was just a tiny part of a scene, but those who yearn for the bone crunching, painfully howling transformations of traditional werewolf lore might be disappointed.  I enjoyed the glittery descriptions even if “real vampires don’t sparkle” fans might not.)

I also found the connection between the two to be very physical and nicely heated.  Indeed the (rather top/bottomy) intimacy between the two sizzled very nicely and was probably the highlight of the story, putting this over the edge from Adult Romance (relationship-focused) to Romantic Erotica (physical pleasure/release focused).  There certainly was story and attractive characters surrounding the sizzle, but in this case it’s really the heat that grabbed my attention.

Recommended for readers who like: Some nice Top/bottom sizzle with a sweet story; a gorgeous bottom and a Top who knows how to Top.

Heat: fire fire fire fire  – A fair bit of explicit and heated action, especially for a novella (with a strong top and yearning bottom).
Passion: heart heart  – The lust was more convincing than the relationship chemistry, but there was certainly a palpable attraction between the two.
Genre:  Romantic Erotica (the sex eclipsed the story for me, although the setting was plenty interesting)

Other comments:

A nice, heated quote: “You won’t hurt me,” he said. “Trust me. And even if you did, I’d probably like it.”
